Viacom Acquires Pluto TV For $340 Million In Cash

Pluto has accumulated more than 12 million monthly active users, 7.5 million of which are on connected TVs. CBS Sues Shari Redstone and National Amusements in Bid to Block Viacom Merger

CBS is calling for a special board meeting on Thursday for directors to vote on a proposal to issue a special stock dividend that would dilute the preferred voting power that National Amusements holds in CBS from 79.6% to about 17%, which would curb Shari Redstone’s power to make changes to the CBS board. Viacom Makes A Bet On Streaming, Joins $45 Million Funding Round For Roku

Roku has now raised at least $209 million in funding. Viacom had previously invested in the digital video world by acquiring a minority stake in DigiTour, a company that takes social media stars from places like Vine, Snapchat and YouTube on tour. This latest investment in Roku came as part of a funding round that closed on January 28 and recently disclosed through an SEC filing. Roku declined to comment and Viacom did not respond to requests for comment. – Shelby Carpenter, Forbes

Cablevision and Viacom settle their lawsuits over channel bundling

The two TV giants have settled their antitrust lawsuits with promises that they’re making “mutually beneficial business arrangements.” Neither side is saying what those arrangements are, however, and it’s not clear whether or not Cablevision is getting a better deal than what it had in 2012. This ruckus started because Cablevision didn’t like being forced to carry niche Viacom channels to get the big channels it wanted — this whole exercise would be pointless if the company didn’t get either a discount or more control. – Jon Fingas, Engadget

MTV desperately wants to reach millennials, but the VMAs are proof they’re doing it wrong

I was willing to tolerate Miley and her tongue in order to enjoy the rest of this year’s show—maybe she’s this generation’s Max Headroom?—and figured it would be no problem, since MTV knows millennials don’t pay for cable and watch everything on the Internet. I was reassured by announcements of an “All Access Livestream” on MTV’s website, and at 9 pm EST, I opened my laptop. What I found—instead of the show everyone was already tweeting about—was a grid of low-quality live feeds, including one featuring a woman who appeared to be a publicist unaware of being filmed, walking down a corridor, which was as riveting as it sounds. – Jenni Avins, Quartz
